U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz defended President Trump's threat to 'hit and obliterate' Iranian power plants if the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked. The president gave a 48-hour ultimatum for Iran to reopen the strategic waterway.
Waltz confirmed growing international support, with NATO allies including Germany, France, Italy, and Japan committing naval forces to secure energy flows. He emphasized that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), a designated terrorist organization, controls much of the nation’s critical infrastructure.
When questioned about targeting civilian energy sites, including the Bushehr nuclear plant, Waltz stated all options remain on the table, arguing Iran blends military and civilian systems in violation of international norms.
Waltz dismissed concerns over war crimes, citing Iran’s repression of its own people and attacks on regional infrastructure. He also addressed a reported Iranian intermediate-range ballistic missile launch toward Diego Garcia, calling it a breach of past assurances.
Despite polling showing 60% of Americans disapprove of military action, Waltz argued the president is fulfilling a long-standing pledge to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran.
