Meta is quietly rolling out a beta feature that integrates an AI assistant directly into Threads conversations. Users in five countries can now tag @meta.ai to get real-time context on trending topics and breaking news.

The AI responds publicly, in the same language as the original post, with its answers visible to everyone following the thread. Users who don’t want the AI chiming in can mute or hide its replies.

The rollout is currently limited to public accounts in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore. There is no word yet on an expansion to the US or European markets, where regulatory scrutiny around AI-generated content is more intense.

This move mirrors Elon Musk's integration of Grok into X, signaling Meta's play to boost engagement. However, the introduction of AI into these conversations raises red flags, particularly regarding misinformation and hallucinations. Incorrect AI responses about DeFi exploits could trigger panic selling or false reassurance.

The beta countries each have different frameworks for AI and financial information. Argentina, for example, has seen explosive crypto adoption amid currency instability, adding another layer of regulatory complexity.

For investors, the key takeaway is that platforms are not neutral. If @meta.ai generates inaccurate information about tokens or market events, the fallout could be significant.
