Uber Technologies and Nvidia announced a partnership to deploy robotaxis on Uber’s ride-hailing network, beginning in Los Angeles and San Francisco in 2027. The service will expand to 28 cities globally by 2028.
The vehicles will operate on Nvidia’s DRIVE Hyperion platform and use Alpamayo, an AI model designed for complex urban driving. Initial phases will involve data-collection vehicles, progressing to supervised operations and eventually fully driverless Level 4 autonomy.
This move positions Uber within a multi-player autonomous ecosystem. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized the company’s strategy of integrating external AV technology rather than building its own.
Waymo currently leads the commercial robotaxi space with services in Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Tesla also plans to enter with its camera-based autonomy and mass production capabilities.
Uber previously partnered with Lucid Group and Nuro to integrate autonomous vehicles into its network, signaling a broader push toward a diversified AV platform.
