Uber will invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian to deploy 10,000 fully autonomous R2 SUVs as robotaxis exclusively on Uber’s platform beginning in 2028.
The deal includes an initial $300 million investment, with remaining funds disbursed through 2031 contingent on Rivian hitting autonomous technology milestones.
R2 robotaxis will launch first in San Francisco and Miami. Uber holds an option to acquire up to 40,000 additional units starting in 2030.
Should all milestones be met, thousands of unsupervised Rivian R2 robotaxis will operate across 25 cities in the U.S., Canada, and Europe by end-2031.
Uber is building a multi-operator robotaxi marketplace, with existing partnerships including Waymo, Baidu, Lucid, and Nvidia.
