Visa's Intelligent Commerce is now powering a new Nevermined integration, allowing AI agents to autonomously purchase digital goods and services via existing card networks. This initiative aims to convert AI agent activity into tangible merchant revenue.

The system merges Visa's agent payment framework with Coinbase's x402, an internet-native payment protocol. This combination enables AI agents to request and pay for individual digital assets, such as articles, dataset queries, API responses, and other services.

Nevermined states that this launch permits users and businesses to link their Visa cards. They can then delegate spending authority to AI agents, with granular controls including budget limits, purchase caps, merchant restrictions, and time-based rules.

Merchants will receive card payments through their existing payment service providers, such as Stripe, eliminating the need for AI agents to navigate human-centric checkout processes.

This development aligns with Visa's broader strategy in agentic commerce. Visa introduced Intelligent Commerce in April 2025 as a framework for AI-driven shopping and payment experiences. In April 2026, it expanded this with Intelligent Commerce Connect, offering a unified layer for secure agent payment initiation, tokenization, spend controls, and authentication.

Coinbase's x402 serves as the machine-native payment layer within this stack. Launched in May 2025, x402 is a protocol for stablecoin payments over HTTP, designed for programmatic payment access to online services by APIs, apps, and AI agents.

Coinbase reports that x402 has already processed over 50 million transactions, expanding into Agentic Wallets. These wallets are built to allow autonomous software to manage funds and make payments without direct human handling of private keys.

For Nevermined, this integration addresses a growing monetization gap as AI agents increasingly consume online content. Publishers and digital service providers have historically faced a choice between blocking agents or allowing free consumption without a viable charging mechanism.

Nevermined's integration offers these businesses a direct channel to sell discrete digital products to software agents, leveraging established payment rails and processors.
