Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has unveiled a new technical direction called the 'Lean Ethereum' strawmap, consolidating priority upgrades for the network through 2029. He emphasized that quantum resistance has drastically risen in urgency, particularly regarding finalizing quantum-safe solutions for data blobs.

Buterin also elevated native privacy to a first-class goal, part of a broader push that includes a new virtual machine architecture like leanISA or RISC-V to support programmable privacy and better scalability. The scope of the transformation, projected to roll out over three to four years, is being compared internally to the 2022 Merge.

Critics within the developer community questioned the timeline. Researcher Dankrad Feist argued AI tools could compress the rollout to a single year, while crypto analyst Ignas Fiodorovas expressed skepticism about the Ethereum Foundation's ability to deliver on schedule, citing previous missed deadlines. Fiodorovas noted the roadmap currently lacks proposals for improved Ether tokenomics.
