YouTube is stepping up its fight against AI-generated slop. The platform announced a new labeling system that makes it much easier for viewers to spot AI-generated videos.
For long-form videos, the label appears below the player, above the description. For Shorts, the label is overlaid directly on the video itself. This is a significant upgrade from the previous system, which relied on creators to voluntarily disclose AI use.
But the bigger change is behind the scenes. YouTube is rolling out an automated AI detection system. Starting this month, if the system detects a video was made with AI, it will apply the label automatically-even if the creator didn't disclose it. That's a game changer for fighting misinformation.
The obvious risk is false positives. AI detectors are not perfect, and creators may find their legitimate content wrongly flagged. YouTube says creators can update the disclosure status in YouTube Studio if they believe a mistake was made. But it's too early to tell how seamless that process will be.
