A new study from ETH Zurich reveals that artificial intelligence can predict a user’s personality based on their chat history with up to 61% accuracy.
Researchers analyzed over 62,000 chats from 668 ChatGPT users in the US and UK, training an AI model to assess the "Big Five" personality traits: agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, extraversion, and openness.
The model performed best at identifying agreeableness and emotional stability, but struggled with conscientiousness. Accuracy improved with longer chat histories, meaning the more someone uses AI, the more predictable their personality becomes.
While individual risks remain low, the researchers warn of major dangers at scale-including the potential for large-scale manipulation campaigns using political propaganda or disinformation.
