Rwandan singer and government critic Aimable Karasira has died as he was being released from prison in Kigali, according to the Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS).

He had been serving a five-year sentence for inciting division, largely due to his critical YouTube videos. The RCS says he died at Nyarugenge Hospital after overdosing on his prescription medication.

The 48-year-old was a former computer science lecturer at the University of Rwanda. He was also an ethnic Tutsi who lost his parents during the 1994 genocide but blamed RPF fighters for their deaths.

Human rights activists and government critics view his death as suspicious and are demanding an independent, transparent investigation. Human Rights Watch has previously raised concerns about the treatment of dissidents in Rwanda.
