Afghan military forces launched "large-scale offensive operations" against Pakistan on Thursday, according to the Taliban government. The move follows deadly Pakistani airstrikes on Afghan provinces earlier this week.
A military spokesperson stated that "heavy attacks on Pakistani outposts" are in progress with no reported Afghan casualties. A separate Taliban spokesperson claimed 15 Pakistani army outposts were captured.
The Pakistani government has not yet responded to the Afghan claims. The offensive follows Pakistani strikes on Nangarhar and Paktika provinces that the UN mission in Afghanistan reported killed at least 13 civilians.
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated significantly in recent months, with border crossings largely closed since deadly fighting in October. Islamabad accuses Afghanistan of harboring militant groups, a charge denied by the Taliban.
