SYDNEY: Australia signed a record A$2.5 billion (US$1.8 billion) deal on June 22 to export a sophisticated over-the-horizon radar system to Canada. This marks the first international sale of Australia's radar technology, enhancing long-range surveillance capabilities.
Defence Minister Richard Marles described it as Australia’s largest defense export. He emphasized the enhanced strategic relationship between Australia and Canada with this agreement.
The radar technology refracts electromagnetic waves off the ionosphere to detect distant objects. BAE Systems Australia will start delivery on July 1, launching a collaborative development of the radar system.
Marles noted that Australia’s radar system is crucial for its northern surveillance and the most advanced globally, suited for Canada's vast territories.
Canada’s Secretary of State for Defence Procurement, Stephen Fuhr, added the deal will create nearly 2,300 jobs annually for the next five years. This new capability will significantly enhance Canada’s Arctic domain awareness and strengthen NORAD's defense operations.
