Afghan women footballers are set to return to international competition after FIFA cleared their participation. The team, which has not played officially since the Taliban's return to power in 2021, aims to be a symbol of resistance for women facing severe restrictions on education, work, and sport within Afghanistan.
Former captain Khalida Popal stated that the team, largely composed of players now living in Australia, will showcase skills and develop youth talent in the diaspora. She emphasized their role as a voice for women inside Afghanistan, sending messages of hope and support.
FIFA is organizing selection camps in England and Australia. The team is expected to compete again in June and may participate in qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Beyond football, the decision is seen as a critical message against governments attempting to erase women from public life.
