Royal Marine Commandos and National Crime Agency officers executed a historic six-hour boarding of the sanctioned Russian oil tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel on June 14. Supported by the Royal Air Force, this marks the first time British forces have intercepted a shadow fleet vessel within domestic waters.

The vessel remains held off England’s southern coast as investigations proceed. Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly confirmed the operation, signaling a strategic shift to disrupt the aging tankers Russia relies on to bypass Western sanctions and maintain oil revenue.

Following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Moscow assembled this shadow fleet to obscure cargo origins and trade above the G7-imposed price cap. The UK government authorized such interceptions in March 2026, following a French-led seizure earlier in June. This independent action underscores London’s commitment to enforcing sanctions where previous measures proved largely symbolic.
