Israel's military says it killed senior Hezbollah commander Haj Youssef Ismail Hashem in a naval strike in Beirut on April 1, 2026. Hezbollah confirmed his death, calling him a "beacon of the Islamic Resistance."
This is considered one of the biggest setbacks for Hezbollah since the killing of its chief of staff Haytham Ali Tabtabai in November 2025. The group has lost most of its senior commanders since the 2023-2024 war with Israel.
Hashem was meeting with fellow commanders when the strike hit, killing seven people and wounding 26, according to Lebanese authorities. Fighting between Hezbollah and Israel reignited early last month, displacing over 1.2 million people in Lebanon and killing more than 1,260.
Analysts close to Hezbollah say the killing is unlikely to affect the group's battlefield conduct, as replacements are available.
