Eight skiers have been found dead and one remains missing following a devastating avalanche in California's Tahoe region. Rescuers continue their search amid treacherous blizzard conditions.

The group was caught in the avalanche early Tuesday on Castle Peak. Authorities confirmed Wednesday that eight of the nine missing skiers were deceased. Six skiers were initially found alive, with two requiring hospitalization.

Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon stated that extreme weather, including gale-force winds and heavy snowfall, is severely hampering rescue efforts. Blackbird Mountain Guides, the company organizing the backcountry trip, confirmed the group was returning to base from the Frog Lake huts.

Over 40 first responders, including specialized ski rescue teams, were deployed. Experts had previously warned of severe avalanche risks in the area.
