Eight skiers have been found dead following a massive avalanche in California's Lake Tahoe region. Search efforts are ongoing for a ninth missing individual, who is presumed deceased.
The avalanche, described as "football-field" sized, struck the Castle Peak area on Tuesday, trapping 15 skiers. Six individuals were rescued, two of whom sustained non-life-threatening injuries and required hospitalization.
Officials stated that recovery of the bodies has been significantly hampered by extreme weather conditions and an additional three feet of snowfall since the incident. The search operation is a joint effort involving approximately 50 crew members traversing treacherous terrain.
The ski group comprised recreational skiers and guides on a three-day trip. The avalanche was rated D2.5 on a destructive potential scale, indicating significant length and deposit. Authorities have notified families but have not yet released the names of the deceased, urging the public to avoid the backcountry to allow rescue teams to focus on recovery.
