The number of Canadians registered with Global Affairs Canada in Mexico has surged to over 55,000, more than doubling in 24 hours. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated Tuesday that the situation is becoming "more stable," with Canadian airlines resuming flights.
This registration is voluntary, meaning the actual number of Canadians in Mexico could be higher. The increase follows a period of unrest in Puerto Vallarta and surrounding areas, triggered by the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," in a military raid.
Gunmen suspected of being his supporters blocked highways and set vehicles and businesses ablaze. Experts suggest the violence was a "message" from the cartel, but anticipate the situation will improve following this significant blow to the organization.
