Mexico's most dangerous attacker, Santiago Gimenez, was stretchered off and hospitalized after suffering a right ankle injury in the 98th minute of his team's World Cup loss to England.

The scene at Estadio Azteca was grim for the host nation: their star striker crumpled on the turf as a stretcher rolled out, with home fans watching their tournament hopes dim.

The injury occurred as Gimenez twisted his ankle making a desperate attempt to equalize late in stoppage time.

Mexico manager Javier Aguirre confirmed after the match that Gimenez was transported directly to a hospital for treatment. "We need to check Santi because he is at the hospital right now," Aguirre stated.

Gimenez had been managing ankle problems heading into the tournament, reportedly training separately from the main squad earlier in the competition to be available for key matches.

Mexico is co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the US and Canada. Estadio Azteca, one of football's most iconic venues, was intended to be a fortress.
