Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed Tuesday that Canada will not join the U.S. and Israel’s military actions against Iran, stating this position has been clear "from the beginning."
During a press event in Brampton, Ont., McGuinty emphasized that Canada is not involved in the conflict and has no plans to become involved. He said the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are in the region but not engaged in offensive operations.
McGuinty also noted that Canada remains open to assisting Gulf nations if requested but has not received formal calls for support. He reiterated that Ottawa was not consulted before the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran.
NATO allies, including Canada, faced pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to secure the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated that no formal assistance requests have been made.
McGuinty also addressed criticism from the Conservative Party over delayed disclosure of an attack on a Kuwait airbase used by the CAF, stressing the need to protect military security.
