Family of jailed Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi says her health is deteriorating rapidly, calling for her immediate transfer to a specialized medical facility.
The 54-year-old human rights campaigner was taken from Zanjan prison to a local hospital Friday after a sharp decline in her condition. Her brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, told the BBC her blood pressure has dropped sharply and cannot be stabilized.
Mohammadi was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting women's rights and opposing oppression in Iran. She was arrested in December after criticizing authorities.
Her brother says local doctors cannot adequately treat her complex medical history, which includes a pulmonary embolism and heart condition requiring stenting. The family and the Nobel Peace Prize Committee are demanding her transfer to a hospital in Tehran where her personal specialists can take over.
Over her lifetime, Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison. She was transferred to Zanjan without warning in February and has had limited family contact since.
