Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker and Cannes Palme d'Or winner Jafar Panahi has been sentenced to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban by Tehran's Revolutionary Court. His lawyer, Mostafa Nili, confirmed the verdict includes a prohibition from joining political or social groups.

The charges stem from making an "underground and problematic film against the establishment," supporting political prisoners, backing the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests, and reposting a video of the anthem "Ey Iran."

Panahi, who was abroad during the initial verdict, voluntarily returned to Iran on March 30 after attending the Oscars. He previously spent 86 days in Evin Prison in 2022-2023 on similar charges. His legal team has 20 days to appeal.
