A gas explosion at a coal mine in China's northern Shanxi province has killed at least 90 people, state media report. The accident at Changzhi city's Liushenyu coal mine occurred Friday evening with 247 workers on duty.
Nine miners remain unaccounted for and over 120 are hospitalized, many from toxic gas exposure. President Xi Jinping has ordered an all-out rescue and a thorough investigation.
The mine, operated by Shanxi Tongzhou Coal & Coke Group with annual capacity of 1.2 million tons, was flagged in 2024 for high gas content. Shanxi, China's main coal mining province, produced 1.3 billion tons last year.
The cause remains under investigation. Company officials have been detained.
