Ukraine launched a drone attack on Moscow overnight Monday, striking a residential building in the Russian capital. The attack hit the Mosfilm Tower, a high-end apartment complex roughly seven kilometers west of the Kremlin and three kilometers from the Russian Defense Ministry.
Photos circulating on social media show damage to the upper floors and drone debris scattered on the street below. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed the attack, claiming no casualties and that air defenses intercepted the drone. Residents reported hearing loud explosions shortly after midnight.
This strike comes just days before Russia's Victory Day parade on May 9, an event of immense symbolic importance to President Vladimir Putin. Security in Moscow has been massively tightened, with hundreds of air defense systems reportedly moved to the capital. Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service described preparations as akin to a military lockdown, including communication blackouts across the city this week.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin proposed a Victory Day ceasefire, communicated only to the U.S. administration, as Russian officials continue to refuse direct contact with Kyiv. This year's parade will be scaled back, with no military vehicles or cadets due to what the Kremlin called the "current operational situation."
