The German national heat record has fallen again. The German Weather Service (DWD) confirmed a temperature of 41.7 degrees Celsius was recorded Sunday at the Neißemünde-Coschen station in Brandenburg. This breaks the record set just the previous day in Saxony-Anhalt.

The extreme heat is causing widespread infrastructure damage. Buckling asphalt forced closures on several motorways, including sections of the A2 near Burg, which has since reopened. In Leipzig, asphalt melted directly above tram tracks.

The DWD also reported the warmest night on record leading into Sunday. The heatwave is forecast to end Sunday evening with incoming storms, bringing significantly cooler temperatures to most regions by Monday.
