A driver with a history of mental health problems drove into a crowd of pedestrians and cyclists in Modena, Italy, on Saturday, injuring eight people, four of them seriously.

Security camera footage showed the car speeding through a city centre street before crashing into a shop window and colliding head-on with a woman.

The driver, an Italian of Moroccan heritage born in 1995, tried to flee but was chased and cornered by four bystanders. He then pulled a knife, injuring one of them.

City prefect Fabrizia Triolo said the driver was not known to police but had been treated for schizoid disorders in 2022 after a period of "psychological disturbance." He was not under the influence of drugs.

Four of the injured are in serious condition; one victim had both legs amputated. Among the victims were a German and a Pole.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the incident "extremely serious" and thanked citizens who intervened to detain the suspect. Modena mayor Massimo Mezzetti expressed deep shock.
