President Macron's visit marks the first by a Western European head of state since Syria's new authorities took power. He arrived in Damascus on Monday with a business delegation to discuss regional security and investment opportunities. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani greeted him at the airport.
"I have come to express France's commitment to the Syrian people," Macron stated. "Together, let us open a new chapter of stability and peace."
