At least three explosions rocked southern Iran’s Hormozgan province early Sunday, May 25, prompting the activation of local air defense systems. The blasts were heard across coastal cities including Bandar Abbas, Sirik, and Jask around 1:30 a.m. local time.

Iranian state media confirmed the incidents, noting that while the situation is under control, investigations into the cause remain ongoing. Authorities have not attributed the explosions to any specific source, nor has there been verified claims of external military involvement.

Bandar Abbas hosts Iran’s largest naval base and serves as a critical hub for commercial shipping. Sirik and Jask further along the coast support infrastructure vital to Iran’s energy exports. The region borders the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy bottlenecks.

The precautionary activation of air defenses suggests military authorities initially treated the blasts as more than industrial mishaps. Previous incidents in the area include a gas leak in January 2026 and a port fire in April 2025. No casualties or significant damage have been confirmed at this time.
