A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Northern Molucca Sea off Ternate, Indonesia on Thursday morning, triggering tsunami warnings across neighboring countries.

The quake occurred at 6:48 AM local time at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii warned of hazardous tsunami waves within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter affecting Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Forecasted waves could reach 0.3 to 1 meter above tide levels along parts of Indonesia's coast, with smaller waves under 0.3 meters expected for Guam, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines and Taiwan.

The earthquake's epicenter lay approximately 120 kilometers from Ternate city in Indonesia's North Maluku province, home to over 205,000 residents.
