A Frontier Airlines passenger jet struck and killed a pedestrian on a runway at Denver International Airport late Friday. The flight, bound for Los Angeles, aborted its takeoff after the impact.
The pedestrian, who has not been identified, jumped the perimeter fence and was hit two minutes later while crossing the runway, according to the airport. The individual is not believed to be an airport employee.
The Airbus A321 was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members. All were evacuated safely after a brief engine fire caused smoke in the cabin. Twelve people reported minor injuries; five were taken to local hospitals.
The runway involved has been closed and is expected to reopen in a few hours. Frontier is investigating the incident in coordination with airport and safety authorities. US Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said local law enforcement is investigating with support from the FAA and TSA.
