Two Iranian women's soccer players who accepted asylum in Australia have publicly stated their intention to continue their professional careers "in safety" there. Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh issued a joint statement thanking the Australian government for providing a "safe haven" and expressing gratitude for the support from the Iranian diaspora community.
They emphasized that their primary focus is on their safety, health, and rebuilding their lives, with the ultimate dream of continuing their athletic careers in Australia. The players were part of the Iranian women's soccer team that arrived in Australia for the Women's Asian Cup prior to recent geopolitical events impacting Iran. Initially, seven players accepted asylum offers, though five later chose to return to Iran.
Pasandideh and Ramezanisadeh have requested privacy from the media as they navigate this transition, stating they are not yet ready for further public comment.
