BUGGENHOUT, Belgium - Four people, including two children, were killed Tuesday when a commuter train slammed into a school minibus in northern Belgium, according to Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot.

The impact was described as extremely violent. The train was traveling at 120 km/h when it struck the minibus, throwing the vehicle about 15 meters into a metal pylon, said Frederic Sacre of rail agency Infrabel.

Police confirmed seven children, a supervisor, and the driver were aboard. No injuries were reported on the train. Officials said the crossing barriers were down and a red light was flashing at the time.

The school serves children with learning disabilities. Prime Minister Bart De Wever said he was deeply moved by the horrific accident.
