Unauthorized fireworks sparked a mass horse stampede in Rome late Friday, injuring multiple soldiers and police officers during a rehearsal for Italy's annual Republic Day parade.
The incident occurred near the ancient Baths of Caracalla as mounted units from Italy's armed forces and law enforcement agencies were practicing. About 35 horses bolted through the streets after the sudden bangs began shortly before 11:30 p.m.

A 22-year-old soldier suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung; his injuries are not life-threatening. At least 15 horses were injured, but none required euthanasia. A 29-year-old policewoman and three other soldiers from the Montebello Lancers were also hurt.
Officials are investigating how the unauthorized fireworks were ignited. Reports indicate a 50-year-old traffic police officer may have lit the fireworks about 200 yards from the horses.
Rome police commander Mario De Sclavis said the incident 'discredits the image of the Corps and its officers,' and promised to hold those responsible accountable.
The search lasted until dawn; the last horse was recovered roughly nine miles from the scene.
