France's municipal elections face foreign interference allegations after left-wing candidate François Piquemal lost Toulouse's mayoral race to incumbent Jean-Luc Moudenc.

Moudenc, representing the conservative Republicans party, won 53.17% of the vote. Piquemal immediately announced plans for legal action citing foreign interference in the election results.

Piquemal's team alleges fake websites and social media accounts spread disinformation designed to discredit the candidate. False claims including unfounded allegations of pedophilia circulated on Facebook before removal.

The disinformation campaign featured fake campaign advertisements using Piquemal's slogans and logos but containing racist messaging. These appeared across multiple platforms including Vinted, Candy Crush, sports betting sites, and alongside regional newspaper content.

France's VIGINUM digital interference watchdog identified technical markers suggesting foreign activity. Four separate instances of suspected foreign digital interference have been linked to the 2026 municipal elections.

The fake advertisements circulated during the legally mandated pre-election silence period, potentially exposing thousands to defamatory and racist content. An investigation continues to identify those responsible.
