Florida lawmakers have passed Senate Bill 178, nicknamed the 'Teddy Bridgewater Bill.' This legislation authorizes head coaches to support student welfare by providing essential effects using personal funds.
The bill requires coaches to report such financial contributions to the Florida High School Athletic Association. It aims to provide a framework for coaches to offer support without facing sanctions, stemming from an incident involving former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
Bridgewater, while coaching at Miami Northwestern High School, provided players with financial assistance for needs like transportation and meals, leading to his suspension. He later explained his actions were driven by a desire to protect and support his student-athletes.
The bill now proceeds to the Florida House of Representatives. Bridgewater, a former Pro Bowler, also coached the school to a state championship.
