UN Secretary-General António Guterres is warning of catastrophic consequences as military strikes resume between the United States and Iran. The renewed conflict breaks a June truce and centers on control of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The Secretary-General urged all parties to take immediate steps toward de-escalation and a return to diplomacy. He stressed that a return to full-scale hostilities would exact an intolerable toll on civilians and harm international peace and the global economy.

Guterres also called for the full restoration of navigational rights and freedoms in the Strait, a critical corridor for oil and gas exports.
