The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in a disproportionately high number of casualties among women and girls. UN Women reports that over 38,000 have been killed since October 2023. This figure includes at least 22,000 women and 16,000 girls, averaging 47 fatalities daily.
Sofia Calltorp, UN Women's Chief of Humanitarian Action, stated that these victims were mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends. The actual toll is likely higher, as many bodies remain trapped under rubble. Gazan health authorities report over 72,315 Palestinians killed and 172,137 injured.
The war has created a severe humanitarian emergency, with women increasingly heading households facing economic hardship and protection risks. Tens of thousands of families are now led by women who have lost their husbands and lack income or support. Access to basic services, including sexual and reproductive health and sanitary products, is critically low. Some women have been forced to give birth in the street due to the lack of functional hospitals.
UN Women is calling for a ceasefire, adherence to international law, and increased humanitarian aid. The agency emphasizes that women and girls must be central to recovery and peacebuilding efforts, partnering with local organizations to deliver aid and ensure representation in decision-making.
