Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has forced Army Chief of Staff Randy George to step down from his position. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced George would retire immediately as the 41st Chief of Staff.
George, a West Point graduate nominated by President Biden in 2023, had not completed his standard four-year term. The career military officer served as an infantry commander in the Gulf War and recent Middle East conflicts.
The Army Chief will be replaced by current Vice Chief of Staff General Christopher LaNeve, who becomes acting Army Chief. Pentagon officials called LaNeve "battle-tested" with extensive operational experience.
Since taking over at the Pentagon, Hegseth has removed more than a dozen senior military officers, including the Navy's top officer and the Air Force's second-in-command.
