Israel’s UN Ambassador Daniel Meron has called on Europe to abandon diplomacy and push for regime change in Iran. Speaking at a key EU summit on 19 March, he stated: “This is not the time for diplomacy - it’s time to end diplomacy and see a change in Iran.”
Meron emphasized strong US-Israel alignment, saying: “The United States and Israel are in this war together.” The US-Israeli campaign, launched 28 February, has killed approximately 40 senior Iranian officials - including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Israel is also conducting a major offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, displacing over one million people and killing more than 1,000. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks across the region - including a 2 March strike on a British military base in Cyprus.
Tehran’s recent blockade of the Strait of Hormuz - carrying 20% of global oil - has disrupted markets and drawn sharp criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who labeled European allies “one-way street” partners for refusing naval support.
Meron warned that Iran threatens Europe directly: “What about them shooting towards Europe, towards Cyprus, towards Türkiye?” He concluded: “This regime of terror must go.”
