On February 28, U.S. and Israeli forces launched airstrikes targeting Iranian military and government sites, assassinating Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other officials. Now, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman - who led the 2015 nuclear deal negotiations - says Iran has emerged from the war in a much stronger position than the United States.
Speaking to Euronews, Sherman noted ongoing talks between Washington and Tehran but warned that what each side says publicly differs. She criticized a framework agreement linked to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, saying it gives Iran too much for too little.
Sherman emphasized that verification by International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors is essential, but the two sides remain in dispute over whether Iran will allow inspections. Diplomacy is necessary, she said, because military action will not solve the problem. She also cautioned that Iran could extend its influence in Lebanon and across the region, complicating stability efforts.
