Venezuela's National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez confirmed Friday that twin earthquakes have killed 920 people and injured 3,360. The UN's top humanitarian official, Tom Fletcher, told AFP the disaster may have left more than 50,000 people missing.
Spain's foreign ministry reported four Spanish nationals are dead and 106 are missing. Among the confirmed victims is Isabel Jara, director of the Canary Islands Office in Venezuela. Fourteen Spaniards are believed trapped under rubble, with rescue teams prioritizing their location.
Spain is coordinating the repatriation of its citizens and has deployed a military aircraft carrying 59 members of its Military Emergency Unit (UME). The plane also evacuated 59 Spaniards, 11 Portuguese nationals, and a Bulgarian citizen.
An initial aid package worth one million euros has been released. Spain is offering to deploy its Start field hospital and is coordinating international relief through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. So far, 16 countries and the UN have sent planes with humanitarian aid.
