The 81-year-old former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO, Mike Jeffries, is facing trial on sex trafficking charges, with his mental competency in question. Audio recordings from prison phone calls show Jeffries discussing the possibility of being found incompetent, expressing fear that he would be 'screwed' if deemed fit for trial.
Jeffries' lawyers argue he suffers from dementia and Alzheimer's, claiming he is unfit to stand trial. Prosecutors, however, say his condition has improved and that he is 'incredibly focused' on avoiding legal consequences.
During a four-day hearing, Jeffries was recorded discussing travel plans, defense strategies, and even praising a TV series, which prosecutors say indicates his cognitive abilities remain strong. His partner, Matthew Smith, and alleged middleman James Jacobson are also charged in the case.
A judge will decide in May whether Jeffries is fit for trial after reviewing testimony from six medical experts.
