KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan - In late December 2025 and early 2026, satellite tracking detected massive formations of Chinese fishing vessels-up to 2,000 boats-stationary in the East China Sea. Analysts from ingeniSPACE identified these as coordinated maneuvers by China’s People’s Armed Forces Maritime Militia (PAFMM), a state-organized force used for gray-zone operations.
These flotillas disrupted shipping routes, forcing cargo vessels to reroute. Experts warn that despite their civilian appearance, the boats operate under PLA command and may be used to pressure Taiwan economically and militarily.

Taiwan faces growing challenges as these formations increase near outlying islands and in the Taiwan Strait. Analysts stress the need for surveillance drones and air patrols to deter escalation.
Jason Wang, CEO of ingeniSPACE, emphasized that intelligence from satellite data is now a key deterrent. "Intelligence is deterrence without provocation," he said.
The port of Kaohsiung, critical for LNG and petrochemical imports, remains vulnerable. Even temporary disruptions could ripple through global supply chains.
