SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally oversaw a test of a high-thrust solid-fuel rocket engine, state media reported on Sunday (Mar 29).
The 2,500 kilonewton engine, made of composite carbon fiber, marks a key step in Pyongyang’s effort to modernize its strategic missile arsenal.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test aligns with the country’s five-year defense plan. Analysts say the increased thrust signals ambitions for global-range intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
This is the first confirmed high-thrust solid-fuel engine test since September 2025. Kim also visited a special forces training base, showcasing readiness for combat.
The move underscores North Korea’s resolve to expand its missile capabilities and challenge regional defenses.
