A North Korean soldier suspected of defecting crossed the heavily fortified Demilitarised Zone into South Korea on Tuesday.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the military secured custody of the soldier in the central front and is investigating.

The DMZ, a 250-kilometer-long border strip, is laced with barbed wire, landmines, and constant surveillance.

Since 1998, more than 34,000 North Koreans have defected to the South, including 899 military personnel. In 2025, 223 North Koreans defected, with women making up 89% of that total.

North Korea’s 26 million population lives largely isolated, guided by the “Juche” self-reliance ideology. Leader Kim Jong Un, in power since 2011, has strengthened ties with Moscow and Beijing.
