Former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was buried Friday following a six-day funeral ceremony. His body was interred at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad.
The burial occurred as renewed hostilities tested a shaky ceasefire. US strikes killed 17 people, and Iran reported attacks on a railway line between Tehran and Mashhad. Iran said it resumed targeting US assets in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar. Jordan intercepted eight missiles launched from Iran.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 in US-Israeli airstrikes that began the war. His designated successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not been seen publicly since his appointment and was not present at the burial. He is reportedly wounded and has only communicated via written statements.
Key figures including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei attended. President Trump declared the interim ceasefire "over," calling continued negotiations a "waste of time." Talks on a final deal, covering the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program, were scheduled to follow the funeral.
