A devastating fire swept through a coastal village in Malaysia's Sabah state Sunday, destroying an estimated 1,000 makeshift homes and displacing thousands of residents. The blaze erupted early morning in the Sandakan district, a "water village" characterized by densely packed wooden houses built on stilts.
Authorities reported that the fire, which engulfed about 10 acres, affected 9,007 people. Firefighters faced significant challenges due to narrow access routes and low sea tides, with strong winds fanning the flames. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the federal government is coordinating with Sabah authorities to swiftly provide assistance and temporary housing for those affected, emphasizing victim safety as the immediate priority.
