A one-month-old migrant girl died of hypothermia early Saturday morning after disembarking on the Italian island of Lampedusa.

The infant was among 55 people-including seven women and six minors-rescued from a metal boat near Favarolo pier. She was rushed to an outpatient clinic but doctors could not save her.

The Agrigento prosecutor's office has opened an investigation and ordered an autopsy. The mother, originally from Côte d'Ivoire, is in severe shock and receiving support from the Italian Red Cross.

Survivors said they departed Sfax-El Amra, Tunisia, paying up to 600 euros per person for the crossing. The group included people from Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea, Mali, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.

NGO Sea-Watch condemned the death, noting their captain faces an investigation for aiding illegal entry. UNHCR expressed deep sorrow, calling the infant "yet another victim claimed along the Mediterranean routes."
