Malaysian authorities have arrested six locals, aged 16 to 21, for suspected involvement in Islamic State (IS)-linked extremist activities. The special operation, conducted between February 14 and 15, spanned multiple states. Police cited intelligence gathered from online radicalization, including propaganda promotion and recruitment efforts. Three of those detained are minors.

Investigations revealed the suspects were active on platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Discord, circulating extremist propaganda and discussing potential attacks. Plans to target police stations, government installations, and places of worship were uncovered. The youths were also heavily exposed to online content related to Middle Eastern conflicts and engaged in war-themed gameplay on platforms like Roblox.

Authorities seized IS flags, extremist literature, mobile phones, and laptops. Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail warned that more arrests are anticipated as investigations continue into broader online networks, potentially involving individuals from neighboring countries. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is collaborating with police to examine the role of specific online platforms and applications in radicalizing young people.
