A 24-year-old man found himself trapped for nine hours inside a Milan bank vault after attempting to steal from safety deposit boxes. Italian police reported the incident on Thursday.
The individual entered the UniCredit branch during business hours and proceeded to the vault area. Security guards observed him on surveillance cameras around 9 pm attempting to access the deposit boxes.
Authorities arrived but could not immediately reach the suspect as the vault's keys were secured within a time-delay safe, set to open the following morning at 8 am. Firefighters worked for hours to breach the safe and retrieve the keys. The man was extracted around 5 am Friday, reportedly in good health, thanks to the vault's ventilation systems.
He was arrested on suspicion of attempted aggravated theft. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage to understand how he entered the vault undetected. UniCredit confirmed the attempted break-in, stating that alarm systems functioned correctly and emergency services were promptly contacted.
