A Singaporean man has admitted to months of severe child abuse against an infant, subjecting the child to horrific acts including choking, smothering, and dunking his head in water.
The abuse, which occurred over approximately three months, ended when a passerby witnessed the man choking the child and intervened before contacting the police.
Investigators discovered multiple videos of the abuse, captured by the offender himself. The man admitted to targeting the nine-to-11-month-old victim due to a personal grudge against his brother-in-law, the child's father. Prosecutors are seeking 12 to 15 years in prison, while the defense is arguing for eight to 10 years.
During the assaults, the man submerged the infant's head in water, pressed a pillow onto his face for extended periods, and repeatedly choked him, causing the child to foam at the mouth. He also used a clothes hanger to suspend the child before dropping him onto a mattress.
The child's grandmother had invited the infant to stay at the family's home, unaware of the unfolding abuse. The man, working as a paramedic at the time, engineered opportunities to be alone with the child.
On one occasion, a passerby observed the prolonged abuse at a void deck and confronted the man, who claimed he was trying to put the child to sleep. Police were called and arrested the man later that day.
Medical reports suggest the abuse may have contributed to developmental delays in the child. The offender expressed remorse and shame for his actions, stating he was prepared to face the consequences. Sentencing is pending.
